God Creates the Heavens and the Earth

¹ In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

² The earth was formless and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep waters, and the Spirit of God moved over the waters.

The First Day

³ Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

⁴ God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.

⁵ God called the light Day, and He called the darkness Night. There was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

The Second Day

⁶ Then God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.”

⁷ So God made the expanse and separated the waters below it from the waters above it. And it was so.

⁸ God called the expanse Heaven. There was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

The Third Day

⁹ Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the heavens be gathered into one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.

¹⁰ God called the dry ground Earth, and He called the gathered waters Seas. God saw that it was good.

¹¹ Then God said, “Let the earth produce plants—plants that bear seed and trees that bear fruit with seed in it, each according to its own kind.” And it was so.

¹² The earth produced plants that bore seed according to their own kinds and trees that bore fruit with seed in it according to their own kinds. God saw that it was good.

¹³ There was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

The Fourth Day

¹⁴ Then God said, “Let there be lights in the heavens to separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years.

¹⁵ Let them shine from the heavens and give light to the earth.” And it was so.

¹⁶ God made the two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

¹⁷ God placed them in the heavens to give light to the earth,

¹⁸ to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good.

¹⁹ There was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

The Fifth Day

²⁰ Then God said, “Let the waters be filled with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the open sky.”

²¹ So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing that moves through the waters, each according to its own kind. He also created every winged bird according to its own kind. God saw that it was good.

²² God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply across the earth.”

²³ There was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

The Sixth Day

²⁴ Then God said, “Let the earth produce every kind of living creature—livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its own kind.” And it was so.

²⁵ God made the wild animals according to their own kinds, the livestock according to their own kinds, and every creature that moves along the ground according to its own kind. God saw that it was good.

Humanity Created in God’s Image

²⁶ Then God said, “Let Us make humanity in Our image and according to Our likeness. Let them rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, all the earth, and every creature that moves along the ground.”

²⁷ So God created humanity in His own image.
In the image of God, He created them.
Male and female, He created them.

²⁸ God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and bring it under your care. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living creature that moves upon the earth.”

²⁹ Then God said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant across the earth and every tree that bears fruit with seed in it. They will be your food.

³⁰ I have given every green plant as food to every animal of the earth, every bird of the air, and every creature that moves upon the ground and has the breath of life.” And it was so.

³¹ God looked at everything He had made, and it was very good. There was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
